Azure Virtual Hub monitoring

An Azure Virtual Hub is the central connectivity point in an Azure Virtual WAN, linking branches, VNets, and on-premises networks through a hub-and-spoke topology. Site24x7 monitors Virtual Hubs to help you track BGP route exchange, routing infrastructure capacity, data throughput, and spoke virtual network utilization, giving you early warnings about routing instability and capacity constraints.

Setup and configuration

Adding an Azure Virtual Hub monitor while configuring a new Azure monitor

  1. Log in to your Site24x7 account.
  2. Go to Cloud > Azure > Add Azure Monitor.
  3. On the Add Azure Monitor page, select Azure Virtual Hub from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu.

Adding an Azure Virtual Hub monitor to an existing Azure monitor

  1. Go to Cloud > Azure, select your Azure monitor, then go to any of the dashboards on the left pane.
  2. Click the hamburger icon and select Edit to open the Edit Azure Monitor page.
  3. Select the relevant Subscriptions and Resource Groups, select Azure Virtual Hub from the Service/Resource Types drop-down menu, and click Save.

After successful configuration, go to Cloud > Azure, click the required Azure monitor, and select Azure Virtual Hub to view the discovered virtual hubs.

It will take 15–30 minutes to discover new Azure resources. For immediate discovery, go to the Infrastructure Dashboard of the Azure monitor, hover over the hamburger icon, and select Discover Now.

Polling frequency

Site24x7 collects Virtual Hub performance metrics every five minutes and displays the minute-by-minute status.

Performance metrics

BGP Peer Status Indicates whether the BGP peer connection for this hub is up—a value change may indicate a BGP session reset or connectivity issue. Maximum Count
Count of Routes Learned from Peer The number of BGP routes this hub has learned from its peer—a sudden drop may indicate a BGP session reset or routing issue. Total Count
Count of Routes Advertised to Peer The number of BGP routes this hub is advertising to its peer—changes may indicate network topology updates or misconfiguration. Maximum Count
Virtual Hub Data Processed The amount of data processed by the virtual hub router. Total Bytes
Routing Infrastructure Units The number of routing infrastructure units provisioned for the hub, which determines its routing capacity—sustained high utilization may require scaling up. Maximum Count
Spoke VM Utilization The percentage of address space utilized by virtual machines in spoke virtual networks connected to this hub. Maximum Percentage
Learned Routes Utilization Percentage The percentage of the maximum supported BGP route limit currently consumed by routes learned from peers—approaching this limit may require route summarization or additional infrastructure units. Average Percentage

Configuration attributes

The following attributes are collected when the configuration changes and are displayed on the Metadata tab:

Subscription The Azure subscription in which this Virtual Hub is deployed.
Resource Group The Azure resource group containing this hub.
Location The Azure region where this hub is deployed.
Name The display name of the Virtual Hub resource.
Provisioning State The current provisioning state of the hub (for example, Succeeded, Updating, or Failed).
Routing State The current routing status of the hub (for example, Provisioned or Failed).
Hub Routing Preference The routing preference configured for the hub (ExpressRoute, VPN Gateway, or AS Path).
SKU The SKU of the Virtual Hub (Basic or Standard).
Allow Branch to Branch Traffic Indicates whether branch-to-branch traffic is allowed through the hub.
Address Prefix The address space (CIDR) allocated to the Virtual Hub.
Virtual WAN The parent Virtual WAN this hub belongs to.
Virtual Router ASN The Autonomous System Number of the virtual hub router used for BGP peering.
Minimum Capacity The minimum routing capacity, in units, provisioned for the hub.

VNet Connections

Each virtual network connected to the hub is monitored as a VNet Connection, with the following configuration attributes displayed on the Metadata tab:

Provisioning State The provisioning state of the VNet connection.
Allow Hub to Remote Indicates whether traffic from the hub to the remote virtual network is allowed.
Allow Remote to Hub Indicates whether traffic from the remote virtual network to the hub is allowed.
Internet Security Indicates whether internet security is enabled for traffic through this connection.
Name The name of the VNet connection.
Unique ID The unique identifier of the VNet connection.
Remote VNet The remote virtual network connected to the hub.

Threshold configuration

Global configuration

  1. In the Site24x7 web client, go to Admin > Configuration Profiles > Threshold and Availability (+).
  2. Click Add Threshold Profile and select Azure Virtual Hub as the Monitor Type.
  3. Set threshold values for any of the performance metrics listed above. All metrics support anomaly detection.

Monitor-level configuration

  1. Go to Cloud > Azure, select the Azure monitor, and click Azure Virtual Hub.
  2. Select a resource, click the hamburger icon, and select Edit.
  3. Configure threshold values using the Threshold and Availability option and click Save.

In addition to performance metric thresholds, the following configuration change alerts are available:

  • Provisioning State change: Alerts you when the hub provisioning state changes
  • Routing State change: Alerts you when the hub routing state changes
  • Allow Branch to Branch Traffic change: Alerts you when this traffic forwarding setting is changed
  • Minimum Capacity change: Alerts you when the minimum capacity is modified

Azure Resource Health alerts are also available:

  • Resource Unavailable: Alerts you when Azure reports the resource as unavailable
  • Resource Status Unknown: Alerts you when the resource health state is unknown

IT Automation

Site24x7's IT Automation enables you to define automated remediation actions that are triggered by alert events for this monitor—for example, notifying a team channel or invoking a webhook when a threshold is breached. Learn how to configure IT Automation for a monitor.

Summary

The Summary tab displays performance data organized by time for the metrics listed above, with the following metrics prominently featured: Routing Infrastructure Units and Learned Routes Utilization Percentage.

To view the summary, go to Cloud > Azure, select the Azure monitor, click Azure Virtual Hub, select a resource, and click the Summary tab.

A Forecast tab is also available for all metrics, providing predictive trend analysis based on historical data.

Licensing

Each Azure Virtual Hub monitor consumes one basic monitor license.
