Schedule Backup in Network Configuration Manager

The Schedule Backup feature in Network Configuration Manager (NCM) allows you to automatically back up device configurations at regular intervals. This ensures you always have the latest running or startup configuration available for restore, comparison, and compliance auditing.

Use case

Manual backups are unreliable in dynamic network environments. Configuration changes happen frequently, planned or unplanned, and missing a backup can delay troubleshooting or rollback during outages.

With scheduled backups, you can:

  • Capture configuration changes automatically.
  • Maintain up-to-date configuration history.
  • Support compliance and audit requirements.
  • Enable quick rollback during failures.
  • Reduce manual administrative effort.

Viewing configuration file backup schedules

  1. Log in to your Site24x7 account.
  2. Navigate to Network > NCM > Schedule Backup.
  3. The Schedule Backup page displays all configured schedules with the following details:
    • Name: Displays the user-defined name of the backup schedule.
    • Frequency: Shows how often the backup runs for that schedule.
    • Start Time: Indicates the configured time at which the scheduled backup begins.
    • Description: Displays the user-provided description of the backup schedule (if added).
    • Backup: Click Backup Now to immediately trigger a configuration backup for all devices included in the schedule.
    • Actions:
      • Edit: Modify the schedule by clicking the pencil icon .
      • Delete: Remove the schedule by clicking the trash icon .

Adding a backup schedule

  1. Navigate to Network > NCM > Schedule Backup.
  2. Click Add Schedule to create a new backup schedule.
  3. Provide details for the following fields:
    1. Display Name: Provide a unique name for the schedule.
    2. Description (optional): Add a short description explaining the purpose of the schedule.
    3. Interval: Select how frequently the backup should run. Choose a frequency based on how often configuration changes occur in your environment. Available interval options include:
      • One hour
      • Three hours
      • Six hours
      • One day
      • Two days
    4. Start Time: Specify the time at which the schedule should begin. Subsequent backups will follow the selected interval from the start time.
    5. Device(s): Select the devices to be included in this schedule.
      Note

Only NCM-enabled devices will be available for selection.

    6. Send Report To: Select the User Groups who should receive backup reports through email. This helps administrators proactively track backup health.
    7. Click Save to activate the backup schedule. The schedule will now appear in the Schedule Backup list view.

Managing backup schedules

From the Schedule Backup list page, you can:

Edit a Schedule

  • Click the pencil icon under Actions.
  • Modify the required details.
  • Save changes.

Delete a Schedule

  • Click the trash icon under Actions.
  • Confirm removal in the pop-up that appears.

Best practices

  • Use shorter intervals for frequently modified devices.
  • Ensure NCM credentials are valid and updated.
  • Periodically verify backup success reports.
  • Avoid overlapping heavy schedules in large environments.
  • Test restore from backup periodically to validate integrity.

Troubleshooting tips

If scheduled backups fail:

  • Verify device reachability from the On-Premise Poller.
  • Check NCM credentials.
  • Confirm SSH/Telnet access is enabled on the device.
  • Review error details in the backup report.
